Special Units are extremely specialized troops that appear on the battlefield less often than basic regiments.

There is a maximum number of Special Units that can be fielded, and this varies with the size of the army (see "Armies of the Han Empire").

GREATER NOBLE CHARIOT WARRIORS

Points/model: 90


Chariot Warriors are nobles who can afford chariots and teams, and the luxury of having a driver to handle the horses while they fight.

Unit Size: Each Chariot model is a single unit.

Crew: Two Nobles.

Weapons and Armour: The crew are equipped with hand weapons, shields, and light armour.  The Chariot has scythed wheels.

Armour Save: 2+.

Options:

  • Any unit may be equipped with spears (+2 pts per model), longbows (+4 pts), bills (+2 pts) or javelins (+1 pt).
  • The horses may be equipped with barding (+2 pts per model).
  • Any Chariot may include up to two extra Warhorses to pull it for +5 pts per Warhorse.
  • When permitted, a chariot can carry a single character who displaces one crewman automatically.  The displaced crewman is lost and his value is not refunded.

GREATER NOBLES

Points/model: 35


The Greater Nobles are noble Han cavalry that come from the sons of the great nobles of the provinces. They are eager to show their skill in battle and to build their reputation. To them, honour and prowess at weaponry is a way of life.

Units Size: 5+

Weapons: Sword, lance, light armour, bow and shield.  They also ride barded warhorses.

Mounts: Warhorse.

Options:

  • Upgrade one Greater Noble into a Musician for +8 pts.
  • Upgrade one Greater Noble into a Standard Bearer for +16 pts.
  • Promote one Greater Noble to a Champion for +16 pts.
  • One unit that contains a Standard Bearer may carry a magic standard worth up to 50 pts.

Special Rules:

Expert Riders.  Greater Nobles are able to fire their bows as they charge, but take a -1 to hit penalty.

Lance Formation.

 

TARTARS

Points/model: 27


Tartars are the wild nomadic tribesmen who roam the plains of the north, raising their herds of horses and half-wild cattle. They are hunters from horseback and great scouts. It is said that a Tartar can ride before he is weaned from his mother's milk. These wild horsemen seem to be one with their horse that they are riding upon, and can do great feats of horsemanship.

Weapons: Hand weapon, lance and bow.  They wear light armour.

Options:

  • May be equipped with shields at +1 pt per model.
  • Upgrade one Tartar into a Musician for +5 pts.
  • Upgrade one Tartar into a Standard Bearer for +10 pts.
  • Promote one Tartar to a Champion for +10 pts.

Special Rules:

Skirmishers, Fast Cavalry, Hatred vs. Everyone

Circle Formation.  The Tartars may form a circle.  In this formation, they can fire their bows in a 360 degree arc, but suffer a -1 to hit penalty.

 

GOSPODARS

Points/model: 32


These are from the nomadic Gospodars. They have held to the old ways and are nomadic by nature. They are great horsemen, and they have lived with a constant state of warfare upon their borders.

STONE THROWER

Sometimes when the armies of the Han Empire march off to war they bring machines of destruction with them for battering down city walls or smashing their enemies' battle lines.  The Stone Thrower is one such war machine.

BOLT THROWER*

Sometimes when the armies of the Han Empire march off to war they bring machines of destruction with them for battering down city walls or smashing their enemies' battle lines.  The Bolt Thrower is one such war machine.
