AMAZONS II (New Style)

I have based this Warband on the WFB Amazon army list by Rick Martin.

The dense jungles of Lustria are teeming with small tribes of Pygmies and Men. These tribes in the main have failed to develop into sprawling civilazations like the men of the Old World. However, there is one unique tribe which has developed into a civilization deep in the jungle. They are the Amazons, a tribe of made almost entirely of women. While the are collectively called the Amazon's, their empire consists of small villages spread throughout the land of Lustria. Each village is led by a chieftan, each of which has pledged their alligence to the Amazon Queen, who rules the Amazon Empire from her throne room in the secret fortress of Ithralia, hidden on the small island known as Amazon Island. The Amazons use weapons such as spears, bows and javelins. They also use a small shield, called a Pelta. The shield is shaped like a half-moon and is light and very manouverable, which suits the Amazon style of fighting.

CHOICE OF WARRIORS

An Amazon Warband must include a minimum of 3 models. You have 500 Tokens which you can use to recruit your initial Warband. Maximum number of models in the Warband is 15.

HEROES

Warchief at 60 Tokens

The Warchief is an experienced Warrior, skilled with both the spear and the bow. Many tales tell of a band of men challenged by a warband of women, the tales speak that the best male warrior had to fight the Amazon leader to be allowed to pass.

Weapons and Armour: The Warchief may be equiped with weapons and armour chosen from the Amazon Equipment List.

SPECIAL RULES

Leader: The Warchief is the leader of the Warband and any model (except Wild Cats) may use her LD if they are within 6" of her.

0-2 Wild Women at 30 Tokens

The wild women are perhaps the most frightening warriors in the Amazon Army. These Wild Women drive themselves into such a mad frenzy of hatred and blood lust that they are both a threat to themselves , their own side and the foe.

Weapons and Armour: Wild Women may be equiped with weapons and armour chosen from the Amazon Equipment List.

SPECIAL RULES

Frenzy: The Wild Women are subject to Frenzy.

0-2 Amazon Scouts at 25 Tokens

Amazon Scouts are the eyes and ears of the Amazon Army. They are taken from the natural hunters and jungle trackers in the Amazon villages.

Weapons and Armour: Amazon Scouts may be equiped with weapons and armour chosen from the Amazon Equipment List.

HENCHMEN

Bought in groups of 1-5 models

Amazon Warriors at 25 Tokens

Every Amazon Women is trained in the ways of warfare in her village from a young age. Due the unforgiving nature of their jungle environment, it is said that an Amazon is taught how to use a sword and shoot a bow before she is taught to walk. Amazon warrior women are incredibly flexible - capable of fighting with a bow as well as with spear and sword.

Weapons and Armour: Amazon Warriors may be equiped with weapons and armour chosen from the Amazon Equipment List.

0-1 Beast Mistress at 25 Tokens

The Amazons live in harmony with the jungle - taking only what they need from it. Some of the women have a unique affinity with the jungle animals. Due to this unique bond, they can summon the jungle creatures and direct them towards their enemies.

The Beast Mistress is accompanied by 1-3 Wild Cats, bought at an additional cost of 45 pts per model.

Weapons and Armour: The Beast Mistress may be equiped with weapons and armour chosen from the Amazon Equipment List. The Wild Cats may not be armed with any weapons or wear armour.

SPECIAL RULES:

Movement: The pack form a Henchmen group of their own and may not break group coherency. However when the pack charges all models may move at full speed, models that are left behind must form coherency in the next turn or as soon as possible.

Leadership: The animals in the pack always use the LD characteristic of the Beast Mistress, they may not use the Leaders LD if they are within 6" of her. If the animal pack is without a mistress, or she is not in groupcoherency with them, they test on their own LD characteristic. Should the pack break or flee when they are without a Beast mistress, or she is not in coherency with the pack, then it is immediately removed from the table as the animals dissapear into the jungles.

As for models. Well, I started off by getting hold of some of the old Citadel Norse female models from GW Mail Order. There is are a couple with spears in particular which are rather good. I also used some Harlequin Shadow Elf Sacrificers in my unit. They don't look very elf like, but very Amazonish. Unfortunately I decided it was probably a good idea to actually get some Warhammer Armies which weren't unofficial painted up first and I left my Amazon army alone for a bit. However, I was looking through various mini-catalogs and web pages and have found some models which would go in really well. Ral Partha do some mounted Amazons with bows, which look like really awesome models. Also, Target games Chronopia range has some models which are good for Amazons. The Sons of Kronos Blade Maidens are stunning models. The Black Sisters from that range are a bit too armoured, but would make quite good champions and heroes. The Warzone Mourning Wolves also make good Wild Women. I am planning on take a look at the Harlequin catalog to see if they have any appropriate models.
